So, I don't want to start an environmental match with this thread at all, I am just wondering if it is actually illegal to remove your cats in Alberta?  So much internet info is filled with american regulations and people just assume it applies here.  I can't find anything about Cats in the Alberta Traffic Act so is there a Federal reg I don't know about?

The question is then... can I legally remove my catalytic converters and replace them with pipe and a muffler?

OR   do I need to go invest in a replacement set-up if they are clogged.  A system that replaces both the cats on my truck is around $250 USD. I can make a universal high-flow work and they are a lot cheaper.  I can replace the 2 cats I have with exhaust tubing for WAY cheaper...

Let me know what y'all think...

Nope, not straight pipes...think they sound retarted.  I picked up a Cherry Bomb Vortex for really cheap and figure I'll see how it sounds.  My cats aren't clogged yet, but I figure they will be eventually, and if it's not illegal, I'll pull them and just run 2.5" from the y-pipe back.

Under my Ex there are 2 cats in a row, I'll probably just cut them open, empty them out, run a piece of tubing inside, then stitch them back up.  With the weld facing up, you never see it from underneath.  That way it'll pass a random visual inspection if I ever happen to venture into BC.

I hope the Vortex sounds ok and not stupid.  I hate loud trucks...  My neighbor has an early 90's cheby srtaight piped and wakes me up on the way home at 2 AM...  Can't even get to Edmonton from here with him without gettting a headache from the drone in the cab on the highway.  Loud exhaust just makes wheelers look bad in the public eye, don't really care but I don't want to contribute to an already large problem...

I would suggest you remove and KEEP the cats. That way, when the laws change (if you still have this rig), you can easily re-instal.
These are really expensive to replace, and if yours are still OK, they are worth keeping.

Ya, I could keep them but I need the flange that matches the one at the end of the y-pipe.  I guess I can head to pick a part with a sawzall and get one from another X.  We'll see.  I figure you've got the right idea because they'll be mandatory eventually...

I'm sure glad you didn't want an environmental match.  Since that's the case I won't say anything - but I bet you know what I'm thinking  :Smiley

I'm no environmentalist, but every time I've mentioned taking off a cat to my "non environmentalist" buddies that work on fast cars all the time... they tell me that cats prevent your engine from spewing all kinds of bad into the air.  NOx (acid rain, smog, etc) and Carbon Monoxide included.

Do what ya want obviously  Grin

As far as I understood it was illegal to remove any emmisions related equipment off a vehicle. I mean everyone does it but that is what I thought!!

They may not inforce it too much in Alberta....just like alot of the vehicle laws......but they could if they wanted to!!

Maybe someone who knows this law could shed some light on these things Grin

I have been pouring over the Alberta Traffic Act and can't find anything provincially in regards to cats being removed.  I know several exhaust shops that say there are no laws concerning it.  There are some laws concerning exhaust systems, most of which most people I know  are breaking.

Cats prevent a lot of things but so does walking into the bush rather than driving.  It's all in how much of the BS you want to believe and how much you want to care about.  You can hate me for cutting my cats and spewing crap into the air (not saying you hate me...I just oversate things for effect...)  and the next guy will hate you for having a big old rig in the bush and not walking, and the next guy will hate that guy for not buying organic, fair trade cotton hiking pants...  you pretty much can't win, so do what is good for you and leave everyone else alone.

Anyway, I am going to start on Federal law and see if I can find anything.  Anyone else with some info, post up.  MAke sure you post links or at least viable quotes or info... theres to much un-supported info online as it is...  No opinions please...just proof...
